|
Here we detail the age groups and skill levels of the various divisions of OYAA Recreational Baseball. The season begins mid-May and ends no later than mid-July. Registration and skill evaluations (Kid Pitch through Pony League) take place in February. Players skills are evaluated by coaches and parent volunteers with each player receiving a rating in the areas of throwing, catching, hitting and pitching (for those who wish to be evaluated.) These assessments make the process of selecting teams fair and consistent. The cost to participate in Recreational Baseball ranges between $80 and $125 for the season. T-Ball (ages 5&6) At this level the players are taught the basics of baseball. The proper techniques of throwing, catching, fielding and hitting will be emphasized. Teams can expect to play two to three games per week on varying days. Separate divisions for 5 and 6 year olds might be formed this season depending on the availability of volunteer league coordinators. NOTE - The T-Ball season starts play about 3 weeks later than the other baseball divisions. Coach Pitch (ages 7&8) At this level the player will continue to build on his T-Ball foundation and will be introduced to hitting a ball thrown by a coach. Teams can expect to play two to three games per week. Kid Pitch (ages 9&10) At this level the batter will face a player pitcher every inning and the concept of "Base Stealing" is introduced. Baseball fundamentals continue to be reinforced. Teams can expect to play two to three games per week. Little League (ages 11&12) At this level, play is close to real baseball, with the exception of a few rule changes. Game and practice schedules will be posted by the coaching staff. Pony League (ages 12&14) At this level of play, players participate in regulation baseball games employing all the standard rules and practices. Coaching Staff Coaches are volunteers who have a son playing OYAA Baseball. Each team has a head coach and up to two assistants. No prior coaching or playing experience is required; however, a working knowledge of the game is helpful. All coaches are required to attend a coaching meeting held prior to team assignments and the start of practice. There are guidelines at each level of play coaches must follow during the season. Umpires Umpires are primarily high school age students. The are provided with umpire shirts. Umpires are required to attend training meetings and a full understanding of the rules of the level of game they will be officiating (Kid Pitch through Pony League.) Umpires are paid for the number of games they work. |
