This program consists of clinics sponsored by the high school varsity basketball teams which are conducted in October and November this year. Players are then assigned to teams, and begin practicing with their teams in December. During the months of January and February, each team will practice on average once per week, and will play one game per week on Saturdays (Jan. 6 - Feb. 24). 5th and 6th grade tournament will be the weekend of Feb 24 & 25.
** Participants must live within the Olentangy School District.  Any player found to be registered outside of the district will be canceled with no refund. ***

Opens - October 1
Wait list - October 11
$20 Late fee - October 23
Closes  - November 1

Coaches Meeting - Sunday, November 19, 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm in Orange High School commons.

Evaluations and Clinics

All participants (rec coaches and players) in the OYAA Recreational Basketball Program are expected to attend and participate in the OYAA Basketball Clinics/Evaluations.  Please make every effort to see that your child attends these sessions. These clinics/evaluations take place and are sponsored by the three high schools' Girls and Boys Varsity Basketball programs and are part of your registration fee.

In addition to being a good learning experience, each player is evaluated at the clinics - these evaluations are used in team formation in an effort to balance the teams for league play at each grade level. Please note that if your child does not attend at least one of the four clinics/evaluations, any teammate or coach request will not be considered.

Lindsay’s Law

Effective September 1, 2017, OYAA will comply with this law by requiring that parents and athletes comply
with Lindsay’s Law as part of the registration process. Links to the video and handout will be included during
registration, and parents/guardians will not be able to complete registration until having reviewed the video and
handout. An “e-signature” indicating compliance with the law must be completed before registration can be finalized. Similarly, coaching volunteers must complete these requirements prior to being approved and placed with a team.

Registration and participation, for both athletes and coaches, will not be permitted until
this requirement has been met.

Team Formation

Players will be evaluated by the respective high school coaches. Teams will be formed based on their elementary school attendance and high school coaches' evaluations. Please note that these assignments are prior to parent / coach requests and that some players may be placed on a team at the next closest elementary school in order to keep the teams as balanced as possible.

Teams will be formed the week of November 5

Refund Policy
Contact the program commissioner/director for cancellation requests.
Registration Dates, Wait List Dates and Refund cut-off dates for ALL programs are shown in the Program Dates/Policies document Calendar (click to view).
*2nd graders are not eligible to play. Any player found to be registered outside their true grade will be canceled with no refund.

Game Make-up Policy: Inclement weather or unforeseen circumstance ~ OYAA will reschedule one game make-up:  Sunday, February 18

Practice Make-up policy:  Practices are automatically cancelled when there is no school.  Practices will not be rescheduled due to inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances.

Parent and Coach Requests

For all requests we will need the school the requesting player attends as well as the requested player or coach full name if a request is made.

All coaches' request for their sons or daughters will be honored.

We will not be guaranteeing that all other requests will be honored but we will try and accommodate requests if it does not sacrifice the competitive balance of the league and if the requesting player attended a minimum of one player evaluation at their respective high school.

We encourage all parents who want to coach, please register as a Coach or Assistant Coach. Any parent requests to coach together will be reviewed after all teams have been formed with at least one coach per team.

All rec coaches are recommended to attend the high school coaches' clinics and evaluations. This is a great opportunity to assist at the clinics and learn drills and techniques for your practices.

Assigned coaches must authorize a background check and have a concussion cert on file by the scheduled coaches' meeting. Failure to complete these requirements will delay delivery of your team uniforms. See COACHING REQUIREMENTS tab for details.

Practices will begin the week of November 26. Practice sessions are one hour. Each team will have a minimum of one practice per week and may be scheduled for two practices occasionally depending on gym availability. Please be prompt beginning and ending practice in consideration of other teams sharing the gym.

Athletic Trainer

OYAA athletes and families will have access to their Community Partner Injury and Priority Scheduling Hotline. This hotline is staffed by certified athletic trainers 7 days a week and is available for questions concerning injuries as well as priority scheduling if needed. Hopefully this benefit will save your families some unwarranted trips to the E. R. Please see the attached flyer.

Home team is responsible for the score clock operator. Visitors are responsible for keeping the scorebook. Game schedules will post on the Game Schedules page in late December. Scoresheets can be printed HERE.

Team Pictures

Professional photos will be taken prior to games on January 20. No purchase is required but please attend for the team photo.

Season Awards

Medals will be awarded to the tournament winner of both the 5th grade and 6th grade

5th & 6th Grade Tournament

A tradition of OYAA Rec Basketball's program is our version of "March Madness". Played the weekend of Feb. 24 - 26, the single elimination tournament involves all boys' and girls' 5th and 6th grade teams. Bracket positions are determined by seeds based on regular season records. Final brackets will be posted after last game results are received. If the tournament is cancelled due to inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances ~ it will not be rescheduled.
