Rec Basketball 26-27

OYAA provides a recreational basketball program for boys and girls grades 3 through 6. This program consists of clinics (grades 4 - 6 only) in October, primarily sponsored by the high school basketball programs. Teams practice once a week beginning the week after Thanksgiving. After winter break, teams resume once weekly practices and games each Saturday - first games January 9. Grades 3 and 4 will play their final games February 20, while grades 5 and 6 will play a single-elimination tournament February 20 and 21.

Registration
Early bird fee is $155. Early bird ends and waitlist begins October 8. Capacity is determined by the number of volunteer coaches. OYAA reserves the right to move to waitlist early for a shortage of volunteers coaches.

Any player found to be registered outside their true grade will be canceled with no refund.

If your child tried out for the Travel program, do not register him/her for the Rec program until you receive tryout results.

Evaluations and Clinics
Participants in grades 4 - 6 are expected to attend and participate in one OYAA Basketball Clinic/Evaluation. Please make every effort to see that your child attends. These clinics/evaluations are part of your registration fee and take place at Fieldhouse USA, Orange HS, or Berlin HS.

In addition to being a good learning experience, each player is evaluated at the clinics - these evaluations are used to support OYAA efforts to balance the individual teams for league play at each grade level. Please note that if your child does not attend one of the clinics/evaluations, any teammate or coach request will not be considered.

STUDENTS must be REGISTERED and PAID IN FULL (not on the waitlist) to attend the evaluation.

Team Formation

3rd grade: Players assigned by schools, requests, and other factors. No evaluation.

Grades 4 - 6: Players are evaluated by coaches at OLSD high schools and/or Otterbein University Basketball. Teams are formed based evaluation results and, to some degree, elementary school attendance. Please note that these assignments are prior to requests. Volunteer location is a huge influence on roster formation. PLEASE CONSIDER COACHING YOUR CHILD!

Rosters will be posted early to mid-November.

Teammate and Coach Requests
Please provide the full name of the teammate or coach request in the child registration. WE WILL NOT ACCEPT COACHES' REQUESTS FOR PLAYERS. Parents chosen to coach will have their own child on their roster automatically.

We will not guarantee that requests will be honored but we will try to accommodate requests if it does not sacrifice the competitive balance of the league and if the requesting player attends a player evaluation.

Coaches
Parents who want to coach must complete a volunteer registration and complete the required risk screening (see Volunteer tab) to be considered. Any parent requests to coach together must be noted in the volunteer registration and will be reviewed after all teams have been formed with at least one coach per team.

Coaches' Meeting - November 22, Orange HS aux gym (tentatively 11:30 or 12:00 PM - TBA). It should last approximately one hour. Please use the athletic entrance. Click here for meeting agenda.

Practices
Practices begin the week of December 1. Practice sessions are one hour, scheduled between 6 and 9 pm. Each team will have one practice, one weeknight per week at an elementary school within the Olentangy district. Due to limitations on space, two teams will be assigned to a gym - so each team will get one half-court for practice. Please be prompt beginning and ending practice in consideration of other teams sharing the gym.

Practice Make-up policy:  Practices are automatically cancelled when school is cancelled. Due to limited space within the district, practices may not be rescheduled due to inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances.

Games
Games begin January 9 and will take place on Saturdays at schools within the Olentangy district. Home team is responsible for the score clock operator. Visiting team is responsible for keeping the scorebook. Game schedules will post in late December. Scoresheets can be printed under Downloads below.

Game Make-up Policy: Inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances ~ OYAA will reschedule one game make-up: February 7.

Team Pictures
Professional photos will be taken prior to games. No purchase is required but please attend for the team photo.

Tournament
A tradition of OYAA Rec Basketball's program is our version of "March Madness". Played on Saturday and Sunday on the last weekend of the season, the single elimination tournament involves all boys' and girls' 5th and 6th grade teams. Bracket positions are determined by seeds based on regular season records. Final brackets will be posted after last game results are received. If the tournament is cancelled due to inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances it will not be rescheduled.

This season's tournament will take place February 21 and 22.

Season Awards
Medals will be awarded to the tournament winners of both the 5th grade and 6th grade.
