Coaching Requirements

All potential coaches must complete a volunteer registration through their OYAA account. This is best done during the registration of the child in their chosen activity/sport; however, it can be completed independent of the child registration. Only registered volunteers will be considered for coaching positions.

Volunteers assigned to teams must pass a screening process described below. The screening is not required of those parents who are sitting at practices to watch their child(ren) and offer to help out occasionally while an approved volunteer is present. It is also not required of those who help in administrative roles (scorekeepers or snack organizers, for example). It is meant for those leading the team. At least one approved volunteer assigned to the team must be in attendance at all games/practices. If a substitute is needed, another parent must register and complete the screening process.

  • Volunteers must be high school graduates at least 18 years of age.

  • Volunteers must view the required sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) video and read the informational handout (this is completed during the volunteer registration).

  • Volunteers must submit a valid completion certificate from an approved concussion safety course (NFHS or CDC).

  • Volunteers must authorize a background screening from our contracted vendor at the expense of OYAA.

Program directors/commissioners must enforce these requirements and will delay the release of rosters, schedules, uniforms and/or equipment until all coaches in their program have complied. Details about how to complete these requirements are below. Additional details about the requirements can be found under the Resources tab.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest and Lindsay’s Law

Lindsay’s Law, Ohio Revised Code 3313.53103707.58 and 3707.59 went into effect in 2017.

In accordance with this law, the Ohio Department of Health, the Ohio Department of Education, the Ohio High School Athletic Association, the Ohio Chapter of the American College of Cardiology and other stakeholders jointly developed guidelines and other relevant materials to inform and educate students and youth athletes participating in or desiring to participate in an athletic activity, their parents, and their coaches about the nature and warning signs of sudden cardiac arrest.

The following resources for coaches were developed to implement Lindsay’s Law:

Links to these resources are also provided within the online volunteer registration form, so this requirement will be met as volunteers submit their registration.

Concussion Safety

All designated volunteers must take a free online training course and submit the completion certificate to OYAA. We prefer that coaches take the NFHS course but will also accept the CDC certification. No other organizations' certificates will be accepted. Certificates are valid for three years and must not expire during the season you are coaching. EMAIL THE CERTIFICATE TO [email protected] as an attachment. Screen prints or photographs of the certificate WILL NOT be accepted . Download your certificate to your drive so you can email or print it when requested.

National Federation of State High School Associations - Concussion in Sports (Click here for NFHS)
This free on-line course is available through the NFHS. Volunteers must sign in or register with NFHS. Completion certificates are kept in your account there should you need to download it again at a later date.

Background Screening

Volunteers will be emailed a link to initiate the background check process. The link is valid for 72 hours, so volunteers should watch for this email addressed from or and promptly authorize the screening. To ensure you receive these important emails follow these easy steps to add Sterling Volunteers as a safe sender in your contact list.
The costs associated with this screening program will be provided by OYAA. Please note that background checks previously completed for another organization will not be accepted for this purpose. Results will be provided to the OYAA, and will remain confidential.
*Note, the link for the background check is not emailed to the volunteer until he/she has been assigned to a team AND has a valid concussion certificate on file.

Please direct any questions regarding the background screening to [email protected].

These coaching requirements help ensure that we can provide a safe and healthy environment for children participating in athletics. We appreciate your continued support of OYAA and our programs.
