2024 Season

OYAA provides a recreational basketball league/program for boys and girls grades 3 through 6. This program consists of clinics primarily sponsored by the high school basketball programs and are conducted in October. Teams practice once a week beginning after Thanksgiving. During the months of January and February, teams will continue practice once a week, and will play one game on Saturdays (Jan. 13 - late February). A single-elimination tournament for 5th and 6th grades will be February 24-25.

Registration
Opens October 1; fee is $155 during early bird period (discount applied at checkout).

Read the Program Dates/Policies page for program dates/deadlines.
*2nd graders are not eligible to play. Any player found to be registered outside their true grade will be canceled with no refund.
If your child tried out for the Travel program, do not register him/her for Rec until you receive tryout results.

Refund Policy
Contact the program commissioner/director for cancellation requests.
Read the Program Dates/Policies document for program dates/deadlines.

Evaluations and Clinics
All participants in the OYAA Recreational Basketball Program are expected to attend and participate in one OYAA Basketball Clinic/Evaluation. Please make every effort to see that your child attends. These clinics/evaluations take place at Fieldhouse USA in Polaris Mall and are are part of your registration fee.

In addition to being a good learning experience, each player is evaluated at the clinics - these evaluations are used to support OYAA efforts to balance the individual teams for league play at each grade level. Please note that if your child does not attend one of the clinics/evaluations, any teammate or coach request will not be considered.

STUDENTS must be REGISTERED and PAID IN FULL (not on the waitlist) to attend an evaluation.
WAITLIST BEGINS OCTOBER 22 or WHEN FULL. CAPACITY DETERMINED BY NUMBER OF VOLUNTEER COACHES.
You may only attend ONE evaluation.

Team Formation
Players will be evaluated by coaches at OLSD high schools and/or Otterbein University Basketball. Teams will be formed based evaluation results and, to some degree, elementary school attendance. Please note that these assignments are prior to requests. Volunteer location is a huge influence on roster formation. PLEASE CONSIDER COACHING YOUR CHILD!

Rosters will be posted early November.

Teammate and Coach Requests
Please provide the full name of the teammate or coach request in the child registration. WE WILL NOT ACCEPT COACHES' REQUESTS FOR PLAYERS. Parents chosen to coach will have their own child on their roster automatically.

We will not guarantee that requests will be honored but we will try to accommodate requests if it does not sacrifice the competitive balance of the league and if the requesting player attends a player evaluation.

Coaches

Parents who want to coach must complete a volunteer registration to be considered. Any parent requests to coach together must be noted in the volunteer registration and will be reviewed after all teams have been formed with at least one coach per team.

Assigned coaches must authorize a background check and have a valid concussion cert on file by the scheduled coaches' meeting. Failure to complete these requirements will delay delivery of your team uniforms and/or schedules. See VOLUNTEERS page for details.

Coaches' Meeting - November 19 at noon at Orange HS auxiliary gym. It should last approximately one hour.

Practices
Practices will begin the week of November 27. Practice sessions are one hour, scheduled between 6 and 9 pm. Each team will have one practice, one weeknight per week at an elementary school within the Olentangy district. Due to limitations on space, two teams will be assigned to a gym - so each team will get one half-court for practice. Please be prompt beginning and ending practice in consideration of other teams sharing the gym.

Practice Make-up policy:  Practices are automatically cancelled when there is no school. Due to limited space within the district practices may not be rescheduled due to inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances.

Games
Games begin January 13 and will take place on Saturdays at a school within the Olentangy district. Home team is responsible for the score clock operator. Visitors are responsible for keeping the scorebook. Game schedules will post on the Game Schedules page in late December. Scoresheets can be printed under Downloads below.

Game Make-up Policy: Inclement weather or unforeseen circumstance ~ OYAA will reschedule one game make-up:  Sunday, February 11.

Bracket positions are determined by seeds based on regular season records. Final brackets will be posted after last game results are received. If the tournament is cancelled due to inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances it will not be rescheduled.

Season Awards
Medals will be awarded to the tournament winners of both the 5th grade and 6th grade.
