OYAA provides a recreational basketball league/program for boys and girls grades 3 through 6. This program consists of clinics primarily sponsored by the high school basketball programs and are conducted in October. Players are then assigned to teams and begin practicing after Thanksgiving. During the months of January and February, each team will practice once per week, and will play one game per week on Saturdays (Jan. 8 - Feb. 26). A single-elimination tournament for 5th and 6th grades will be the weekend of Feb 26 & 27.
Opens October 1.
Waitlist dates and refund deadlines for ALL programs are shown in the Program Dates/Policies document (click to view).
*2nd graders are not eligible to play. Any player found to be registered outside their true grade will be canceled with no refund.
If your child tried out for the Travel program, do not register him/her for Rec until you receive tryout results.

Refund Policy
Contact the program commissioner/director for cancellation requests.

Evaluations and Clinics
All participants (rec coaches and players) in the OYAA Recreational Basketball Program are expected to attend and participate in the OYAA Basketball Clinics/Evaluations. Please make every effort to see that your child attends these sessions. These clinics/evaluations take place at and are primarily sponsored by the four high schools' Girls and Boys Varsity Basketball programs and are part of your registration fee. Your child should attend at the high school assigned to your current address.

In addition to being a good learning experience, each player is evaluated at the clinics - these evaluations are used to support OYAA efforts to balance the individual teams for league play at each grade level. Please note that if your child does not attend at least one of the four clinics/evaluations, any teammate or coach request will not be considered.
New format for the clinic/evaluation will include drills for skills assessment, height measurement, and competitive games in an open gym format to further evaluate the athletes.

Team Formation
Players will be evaluated by the respective high school coaches and/or an approved evaluator. Teams will be formed based on their elementary school attendance and high school coaches' evaluations. Please note that these assignments are prior to requests and that some players may be placed on a team at the next closest elementary school in order to keep the teams as balanced as possible.

Rosters will be posted the week of November 8.

Teammate and Coach Requests
Please provide the full name of the teammate or coach request. This should only be noted in the comments field of the player registration. WE WILL NOT ACCEPT COACHES' REQUESTS FOR PLAYERS. Parents chosen to coach will have their own child on their roster automatically.

We will not guarantee that requests will be honored but we will try and accommodate requests if it does not sacrifice the competitive balance of the league and if the requesting player attends a minimum of one player evaluation at their respective high school.

Parents who want to coach must complete a volunteer registration to be considered. Any parent requests to coach together must be noted in the volunteer registration and will be reviewed after all teams have been formed with at least one coach per team.

All rec coaches are recommended to attend the clinics and evaluations. This is a great opportunity to assist at the clinics and learn drills and techniques for your practices.

Assigned coaches must authorize a background check and have a valid concussion cert on file by the scheduled coaches' meeting. Failure to complete these requirements will delay delivery of your team uniforms and/or schedules. See VOLUNTEERS page for details.

Coaches' Meeting - November 28, 12:30 - 1:30 pm at Orange HS auxiliary gym

Practices will begin the week of November 29. Practice sessions are one hour. Each team will have one practice, one weeknight per week at an elementary school within the Olentangy district. Due to limitations on space, two teams will be assigned to a gym - so each team will get one half-court for practice. Please be prompt beginning and ending practice in consideration of other teams sharing the gym.

Practice Make-up policy:  Practices are automatically cancelled when there is no school.  Due to limited space within the district practices may not be rescheduled due to inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances.

Games begin January 8 and will take place on Saturdays at a school within the Olentangy district. Home team is responsible for the score clock operator. Visitors are responsible for keeping the scorebook. Game schedules will post on the Game Schedules page in late December. Scoresheets can be printed HERE.

Game Make-up Policy: Inclement weather or unforeseen circumstance ~ OYAA will reschedule one game make-up:  Sunday, February 13.

Team Pictures

Professional photos will be taken prior to games on January 22. No purchase is required but please attend for the team photo.

5th & 6th Grade Tournament

A tradition of OYAA Rec Basketball's program is our version of "March Madness". Played the weekend of Feb. 26 - 27, the single elimination tournament involves all boys' and girls' 5th and 6th grade teams. Bracket positions are determined by seeds based on regular season records. Final brackets will be posted after last game results are received. If the tournament is cancelled due to inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances it will not be rescheduled.

Season Awards
Medals will be awarded to the tournament winners of both the 5th grade and 6th grade.
