March 17, 2020

Hello, OYAA:

Per our March 12 email, OYAA has only suspended its season and will decide as we move closer to April if we will need to cancel. Our season does not start until after Spring break and we certainly want to be able to offer our programs for our kids.

As always, we will align with our school district and if/when they cancel, OYAA will follow their lead. We will then communicate how we will facilitate your refund.
Our best to you and your family,

OYAA Administration

AAA Minors Evaluations for 2021 Season:
During the February registration period all 10U players will register for AA Minors.

Players drafted to a AAA team after the September, 2020 draft do not need to register again. You are already assigned to your team.

Does your baseball player play multiple sports? Does your family have multiple children playing multiple sports? Does your ball player play travel soccer, basketball, lacrosse? Then OYAA has the 10U baseball program for your serious athlete called Cal Ripken AAA Minors.
Q:  How do I register my son for AAA Minors?
A:  Log into your OYAA account to register your son to be evaluated. There is no cost to be evaluated. You only pay if your son scores high enough to be drafted to a AAA Minors team.
Q:  WHAT IS AAA MINORS?

A:
THE SCOOP ON AAA MINORS:  Does your baseball player play multiple sports? Does your family have multiple children playing multiple sports? Does your ball player play travel soccer, basketball, lacrosse? Then OYAA has the baseball program for your serious athlete. OYAA Rec Baseball offers an upper level baseball program for your 9 and 10 year-old athlete (cannot turn 11 before May 1, 2018). We call it AAA Minors. Please read on for the complete scoop. The neat thing about AAA Minors is that all games are played in the Olentangy School District against their friends and it is a very competitive brand of baseball. Travel baseball players are also welcome to come be evaluated and play in our league. The tournament all-star teams will get to play in the Cal Ripken State Tournament. They win that, they move on to the regional tournament. They win that, it's on to the Cal Ripken World Series. Our 9U team were the Ohio Champions in 2018.

Q:  WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AA MINORS AND AAA MINORS SINCE THEY ARE BOTH 10U (9 & 10 YEAR OLDS)?

A:
Both AA & AAA are a competitive brands of baseball because players of equal skill sets are competing against one another. AA Minors is for players new to baseball, slower to develop the baseball skill set, and players less serious about baseball. Whereas, AAA Minors is for players with more developed baseball skills and are willing to practice more. Teams are established after evaluations with the division limited to 6 teams of up to 12 players. The focus is to introduce strategy and team play with further refinement of the fundamental skills of baseball. Games are played on 65' bases and 46' mounds. Teams are chosen through a draft. There will be 2 or 3 games per week, including an occasional Saturday doubleheader.

Q:  HOW DOES MY SON GET ON A AAA MINORS TEAM?

A:
Each player must register and attend a tryout in the fall or early spring to be considered for a AAA Minors Team. Those who defer and are not evaluated in August or those who tryout and are not drafted will get a second chance in the early spring evaluations. When registration opens February 1, 2020, all 10U players will register for AA Minors. In April, 2020, there will be 2 evaluation dates for all 10U players. Each player must attend one session. The remaining AAA Minors roster spots will be chosen after the spring evaluations. Players who did not attend the evaluations or were not drafted to a AAA team will play in the AA Minors Division. AAA Minors does have a higher cost than AA Minors.

Q:  WHAT DO BENEFITS DOES MY SON GET BY PLAYING AAA MINORS?

A:  He gets to play with and against his friends (and new friends) playing very competitive baseball. He gets to be around other baseball athletes who love baseball just as much as him and want to improve their game as much as him. They get fall baseball training along with a couple scrimmages before they go into November and December baseball hibernation. They have the opportunity to make a 9U or 10U OYAA Lobos Tournament team with the privilege to play in several July post season tournaments including the Cal Ripken Ohio Tournament. We offer winter training starting in mid-February.
Q:  WHY SEPARATE THE PLAYERS INTO TWO DIVISIONS:
A:
The purpose of separating the 9 & 10 year-old players into two divisions is to create a more competitive balance and to allow players with comparable skill sets to compete against one another. We offer evaluations to figure out at which level the ball player should be playing. The AAA Minors players will be chosen from the 10U August and March/April evaluations.

In professional baseball, AAA baseball is one step away from the Major leagues and AA baseball is two steps away from the Majors. Generally, AAA players have more advanced baseball skills compared to AA players. OYAA offers our version of AA & AAA Minors baseball. We separate the serious athlete and more skilled baseball player into our AAA Minors division.

Spring Evaluations:  Players are expected to attend one of the evaluation sessions at the end of March and first week of April. The AAA Minors Division is made up of the top 66 to 72 10U players after the fall and spring evaluations. The players are drafted to 6 teams. After the fall evaluations and draft, 30 to 36 players will be drafted to 6 AAA Minors teams. The remaining players will be drafted to the 6 AAA Minors teams after the winter/spring evaluations.

The AA Minors division is comprised of players who weren't chosen in the AAA Minors draft or players who did not go to any of the evaluation sessions.

The coaches for both AAA Minors and AA Minors are chosen from parents who have volunteered during the registration process.

Babe Ruth 13-15 -
Registration for Babe Ruth Division open February 1, 2021 and is open until April 15, 2021

We had a 10 team Delaware County Babe Ruth League in 2019 (7 OYAA teams, 2 Big Walnut teams & 1 Delaware team).
Registration is open to anyone that turns 15 prior to May 2, 2019 (see age chart). This could be some sophomores, all freshmen, 8th graders, and 7th graders. Travel ball players are welcome to play. You get to play with and against your OLSD classmates and other area friends. If you love baseball and you are the right age, we want you playing Babe Ruth baseball. Who knows who is going to be the next late bloomer? Our first game will be in May after school baseball is over. The last game will be in mid-July.
There will be up to 16 games scheduled with two to three games per week with an end of season league tournament.

Babe Ruth 13-15 will have a Tournament Team(s) called OYAA Lobos that will participate in the Babe Ruth tournament trail. The Tournament Team will be comprised of the 12-14 top players, as chosen by the coaches. There is the possibility of having separate 13U, 14U & 15U teams. There will be a fee for players chosen to the Lobos Tournament Teams to cover the expense of their uniform and any tournament entry fees. For any player chosen to the Lobos Tournament Team, there will be a mandatory parents meeting to discuss what is involved in the special distinction their ballplayer has earned. These games will be played after July 4. Regional and World Series qualifying teams require out of state travel.

Babe Ruth 16-18 -
Registration for Babe Ruth Division open February 1, 2021 and is open until April 15, 2021
New for 2021 season is the opportunity for 16-18 year-olds to play baseball outside travel ball. What could be better than playing community based competitive baseball. Since this is the inaugural season, we need to play this one by ear based on the number of players to register. We started our 13-15 Babe Ruth League with one team in 2016 and it grew to a 10 team league in 2019. If we have three or less teams we will play a schedule against other community based and travel teams. If we have four or more teams, we will play a local league schedule in addition to adding games against other community based teams and travel teams. One fee will cover fields, umpires, a hat and jersey.

FIELD MATRIX FOR OYAA BASEBALL:

If you would like to reserve field space at one of the OYAA fields, contact the OYAA Rec Baseball Commissioner, Tom Bee at [email protected] about being added to the schedule. OYAA Rec Baseball has priority at Scioto Ridge fields #2 & #3, Freedom Trail, Shanahan MS #2, Alum Creek Elem and Liberty Park fields 3 & 4. We look forward to working with others and being a vibrant part of our growing community. Here is the link:  2019 OYAA Rec Baseball Master Schedule showing open field space. 2020 Field Schedule will be added in late March.
